Jeff advances to one game ahead in the Mississippi Valley race after a 14 0 win over city rival Washington at Kingston Stadium. Two pass interceptions powered the defense in a rugged battle, holding Washington to 160 yards.
Dennis Bandy scored on 7 and 47 yard runs and added two conversions as Dubuque defeated previously unbeaten Iowa City 26 12 in a Mississippi Valley Conference football game. Bandy finished with 138 rushing yards on 20 carries and John March added two rushing TDs.
Jeff advances 14 0 early as Bob Fulton intercepts Keith Blomberg to spark a 14 play drive capped by Rod Brecke’s TD. Wash counters with strong defense holds Jeff to 162 total yards while John Knutson and Steve Zobac return interceptions to key field positions.
Manchester defeats Marion 7 to 6 on Marion’s field after a deflected pass in the final 11 seconds. Larry Rasmussen starred for the Manhawks with the game winning catch from Dave Okerlund, as late fumbles and a disputed pass interference shaped a dramatic finish.
Midland of Wyoming secured a 19-13 win at Linn-Mar as Jim Towers threw two touchdowns and ran for another. The victory moves Midland to 4-1 in the Pinicon Conference while Linn-Mar drops to 1-4.
Jefferson J-Hawks celebrate a 14 0 win over Washington and look to dunk coach Ted Lawrence in the Cedar River Monday. Players Rod Brecke Steve Zobac John Knutson Bob Fulton and Bob Jamison starred with two interceptions. Lawrence praised Washington and noted their strength while sharing light hearted prep for the splash event.
Washington football coach Bud Rainbow lauded the defense in a 14 0 defeat to top rated Jefferson at Kingston Stadium. He cited a costly fourth and seven call and two Jeff interceptions that turned into touchdowns while noting injuries to end Keith Faidley ending his season.
Indiana seniors Rick Badar and Tom Nowatzke ignited a fourth quarter surge, throwing 25 and 27 yard TD passes to Bill Malinchak and rushing for a 7 yard score to overcome Miami Hurricanes. Hol lister recovered a blocked kickoff at the Miami eight after Blanchard’s miscue.
San Antonio lost what would have been its first world championship bout when Jesus Pimentel withdrew from a bantamweight title clash with champion Eder Jose after closing his training camp and returning to California.
Regis Royals cruise to a 34 12 victory over Alleman on Friday night led by Dick Stanley two rushing touchdowns Rick Wagner and Jim Madden connection and a key defensive interception by Doug Morehead Regis opened with a 50 yard seven play drive capped by Rick Wagner two yard TD Regis extended lead with a 24 yard Stanley run and a later pass to Wagner Mad den scored the final Regis points while Alleman staged a late rally with a fourth quarter scoring drive and a late interception return
Cedar Rapids Regis defeated R J Alleman 34 to 12. Tama Toeo edged by C R Prairie 19 to 7. Mississippi Valley Davenport West rolled Davenport Central 20 to 0. Rock Island beat East Moline 33 to 7.
In Friday night action from Des Moines and surrounding areas the AP top ten Iowa football teams posted mixed results. Rapids Jefferson defeated Cedar Davis ash Washington 14-0 while Cedar Rapids Washington also fell 14-0 to Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Boone beat Newton 21-14 and Sioux City Central defeated Sioux City East 40-19. Des Moines East and Des Moines Roosevelt were scheduled to play Saturday after a 20-20 tie with Shenandoah. Fort Dodge lost to Mason City 34-13 and Mount Pleasant defeated Fairfield 10. Audubon lost to Lake City 31-12. Des Moines East and Des Moines Roosevelt game result pending.
Boston flanker back Jimmy Colclough stood in for injured Art Graham and caught two touchdown passes from Babe Parilli while setting up a fourth score in a 24-7 AFL win over Kansas City. Attendance was 27,456.
Tama-Toledo jumped to an early 13 0 lead and held Prairie to seven points as Rockne Forman connected with Ron Cory for a 29 yard TD. Prairie scored once on Gene Goodrow 35 yard run. Doug Custer added a 23 yard TD for the Trojans.
Mickey Wright of Calais led the Phoenix Thunderbird Ladies Open first round for $11,000 prize money as Althea Gibson was disqualified for an incorrect scorecard. Wright led with strong play in the early going while Gibson faced the penalty in Arizona.
