Three Slain Over Anger At Marriage

Oliver C. St. Clair, 38, killed his teenage stepdaughter Margaret Bledsoe 17 and her husband Edwin M. Bledsoe 20 after they eloped to marry without his permission. He then shot himself at their West Memphis, Arkansas, home, leaving a note of intent after locking the doors and calling police.

Second Audit in Chest Campaign Shows 201,988

Cedar Rapids Marion Community Chest audit lists 13,424 pledges and gifts totaling 201,988, about 74 percent of the 270,362 needed for 24 Red Feather agencies next year. Six regiments exceeded goal with percent achievements ranging 100 to 189 percent. groups and firms over top include Newman's Link Belt Speeder, UAW locals, Allen Motors, Petersen Baking, The Gazette, Tribune, and Illinois Gas and Electric.

Earl Whitehill Dies in Omaha After Surgery

Cedar Rapids native and former major league pitcher Earl O. Whitehill, 54, died Friday in an Omaha hospital after brain surgery following a car crash in an Omaha suburb. The crash involved a 21 year old driver charged with running a stop sign and driving without a license. Whitehill had been hospitalized since Sunday after a subdural hematoma, with his death prompting possible manslaughter charges. Burial planned in Cedar Memorial park cemetery. services to be announced.

Saar Accord Creates West European Defense Union

In Paris on Saturday the United States Britain France and 12 Western European nations signed 12 documents forming a West European defense union with a rearmed Germany. The Saar settlement includes a three month referendum and German sovereignty restoration while NATO and Brussels ties expand.
