Conference spotlights child care policy issues
Twenty six years after a White House conference on children the nation still faces high prices night and weekend care and high turnover in the industry serving about ten million children daily. The burden falls on working families across incomes with average annual day care costs around four thousand six hundred dollars per child. Experts warn that many children in care miss personal attention and stimulation essential for healthy development. The White House will host a session with educators and experts to explore improvements amid tighter spending and welfare reform. The goal is to urge business leaders to see quality child care as a worthwhile investment, with working poor hit hardest as they rely on care to stay employed.
