Marion Council approves postponement of diagonal bypass link
The Marion City Council endorsed delaying the diagonal connection of the proposed Marion Bypass to First Avenue East in Cedar Rapids. Officials say Marion Cedar Rapids and IDOT staffs now agree, with IDOT commissioners to decide next Tuesday. A tele televised sewer inspection contract worth 11000 was awarded to G W Howe Sanitation.

Rural Iowa couple to face grand jury in extortion scheme
James R. Whitford and Donna Mae Whitford of Delhi waived preliminary hearings in Cedar Rapids federal court. They are charged in an $800 000 extortion plot against grocers threatening to inject insecticide into food. Mrs Whitford is free on recognizance. her husband is jailed on a 50 000 bond. The offense carries up to five years imprisonment and a 1000 dollar fine.

Vandals deface Linn-Mar track with red and gold slogans
Slogans and markings in red and gold were spray painted on Linn-Mar High School Armstrong Field track and facilities, including goal posts and a concession stand. Regis High School reported its team colors match the vandalized track after a 22 to 15 double overtime Linn-Mar win. Authorities seek suspects with help from Regis officials. Police noted a barn near the campus also received graffiti amid the incident.
