Sanford's Name Change Traces Cedar Rapids Bookstore History
The Cedar Rapids bookstore lineage began in 1851 in Iowa City with William Lee, grew through George Mullin and others, moved to Cedar Rapids by 1883, expanded to include Kodak and Shaeffer Pen lines, and finally became Sanford's after Morris Sanford bought the business in 1917 and renamed it in 1920. Ownership shifted to James Morse and Ballard family members, with the latest note of new owners tied to Dorothy Morse and Ruth Allen.
