Supporters Raise Fund for J. Edgar Hoover Memorial
Washington supporters of J Edgar Hoover launch a campaign to raise a half million dollars for a memorial monument and a scholarship fund. The drive by the Society of Former Special Agents follows disclosures about Hoover’s FBI conduct including actions against Martin Luther King and political groups. Contributions have surpassed $100,000 from ex agents, friends, and corporations, with typical gifts from $5 to $5,000. On this date in 1964, funeral services were held in New York for Herbert Hoover.

Judge Halts U.S. Tuna Fishing Ban
A federal judge in San Diego blocked enforcement of a tuna fishing ban set to start Friday, saying the economic impact would be enormous. The 10 day restraining order delays the ban as fishermen plead it would wreck the industry and a Nov 1 hearing will decide if the order becomes permanent.

Board Approves Broad Alcohol Ads in Oregon
The Oregon liquor control commission voted to allow advertising of alcoholic beverages on billboards signs tavern walls and various objects effective Dec 1.
