Exports For 1940 Lowest In 69 Years, Imports Surpass
The 1941 foreign crops and markets report shows U S agricultural exports at their lowest level in 69 years and under imports for the second time on record. For Sept 1940 to Jan 1941 exports were about 240 million yearly, with imports at 628 million and exports at 350 million. The report warns that European war disruption and potential total access loss to European markets threaten long term American agriculture, noting cotton, fruit, tobacco and pork declines and a shift toward concentrated foods accounting for about 30 percent of exports.

Record Chick Output Set In September By Hatcheries
Washington D C—September saw a new monthly high for commercial hatcheries with 23 058 000 chicks produced, up 79 percent from September last year and 63 percent above the 1939 September peak. For the first nine months, output exceeded last year by 203 556 000 chicks, and the 1939 level for that period by 125 480 000. Heavy breed chicks made up 86 percent of September hatchings, and demand for eggs and chick production outlook remain strong despite higher feed costs and only modest gains in broiler prices. Egg production is now the urgent need as the feed egg price ratio cools slightly, with egg prices at their highest since 1929.
