The pending ban on cyclamate will overhaul a billion-dollar diet food and drink sector and reshape American eating habits. The FDA limit and industry move toward sugar or saccharin substitutes will erase many brand names from households and force relabeling of diet products.
Washington's Soft Drink Association says it will suspend production of low calorie drinks containing cyclamates immediately after meeting HEW Secretary Finch. Exec VP Tom Baker notes doubt about substitutes before the year end ban and says firms will pursue alternative sweeteners for continued availability. Diet foods with cyclamates also face a February 1 ban.
Dr Michael Sveda questioned the U S government's ban on cyclamate asking if sugar industry losses or scientific reasons spurred the tests. He said he would like to see tests on other sweeteners and cautioned about studying rat cancer risks with any substance in high amounts.

A Randalia woman, Carolyn Engeler 57, was killed and seven others injured in a two car crash two miles northeast of Oelwein at a county road intersection Saturday afternoon. Engeler’s daughter Joyce Miller and two grandchildren Ronnie 7 and Carol 13 were taken to Allen Hospital Waterloo with severe injuries. Linda 14 and Liza 9 Miller were hospitalized in Oelwein. Ervin Holthaus and Linda Myers of Aurora were in the other car. All were thrown from their vehicles at the blind unmarked crossing. Investigators worked Saturday night to determine the cause.
