Dan Jirsa led Mid Prairie of Wellman to a 52-8 victory over Iowa City U High. He ran for a TD and threw 54 and 14 yard scoring passes to Don Showalter and George Schaefer. Dennis Miller added three one yard TDs as Mid Prairie improved to 5-0 in the Eastern Iowa Hawkeye conference while U High, 2-5, scored in the fourth on Nick Cilek’s one yard run.

Kennedy high school edged Muscatine 22 12 to keep its Mississippi Valley conference title hopes alive. Steve Marks threw a 54 yard TD to Don Greenwood and later 19 yard run set up another score. Muscatine answered with a 22 yard pass to Bob Vargas and a late TD but could not overtake the Cougars. injuries plagued Kennedy as several starters were sidelined for the Jefferson game.

City High hands West first defeat in see-saw thriller

Iowa City West suffered its first defeat 26-21 as City High rallied from behind. Litthke Hawk QB Bob Schultz connected four straight passes finishing with a 16 yard TD to Steve Burkett with 38 seconds left. West had led 21-20 late after a 14-7 halftime edge.

Oelwein Star QB Rushed to Hospital After Friday Game

Oelwein quarterback Rob Fick, 17, was hospitalized with an injured kidney and broken rib after Friday's 40-6 win over New Hampton. He did not complain during or after the game and became ill at home overnight. Fick is the high school's leading scorer.
