Panel bars promotion rule change for Cedar Rapids police
Cedar Rapids Civil Service Commission unanimously rejected Public Safety Commissioner Bob Jaeger’s plan to relax police promotion rules. The panel said leaders require college education plus street experience, with the department’s 7 million dollar budget and 200 plus employees. Jaeger proposed promotions for non degree officers with more years in service. Current rules since 1986 require degrees for sergeant lieutenant and captain plus specified experience, with higher degrees for assistant chief and chief.

Bequest advances Cedar Rapids symphony and theatre solvency
Audrey Linge announced on Monday she will donate the Iowa Theatre Building to the Cedar Rapids symphony and Theatre Cedar Rapids. Seventy percent goes to the symphony and 30 percent to the theater. the theater will buy the symphony’s share for 332000 and begin collecting rent from tenants. The move brings the orchestra closer to its 1.5 million fundraising goal and unlocks an endowment using 300000 in escrow to repay bonds. Office rent is estimated at 60000 to 70000 yearly.
