Three American doctors Dr Rosalyn Yalow Dr Roger Guillemin and Dr Andrew Schally won the 1977 Nobel Prize in medicine for research on peptide hormones and endocrine disease. The Royal Caroline Institute called the work brilliant formidable and enormous in impact, marking a new era in endocrinology.
A West German Lufthansa Boeing 737 with 91 aboard was hijacked over southern France and landed at Rome where the Tiger Group member identified as Katoum demanded the release of comrades held in German prisons. The aircraft refueled in Rome and then took off toward Nicosia, Cyprus, amid anti terror police presence.
Cedar Rapids residents will vote on a cable television franchise this fall. Cox Cable Communications Inc. spokesman Tom Dowden said a special referendum is likely for late November or early December after a meeting with Mr Kopel.
