Emily Thach leads a CEMREL storytelling project to bring Beowulf Iliad tales to kindergarten through sixth grade. Children hear vivid myths then retell them for teachers to transcribe, showing books are created by real people not only scholars.
In a study of 3 to 9 year olds with leukemia, Myra Bluebond-Langner reveals how children and parents use mutual pretense to shield each other from impending death. The book discusses parental guilt, identity strain, and the need to tell children what they want to know, when they want to know it.
Central YMCA opens a disco dance program next week at Adams School. Larry Bush says four classes run Mondays and Wednesdays at 7 and 8 pm, starting Oct 18. Registration begins Thursday by calling 366-6421. Fee is 15 dollars. YMCA membership not required.
Teachers of preschool-age children are invited to attend a workshop on Oct. 23 sponsored by the Cedar Rapids Area Extension Service. The session will be at the 4-H fairgrounds Montgomery Hall Iowa City with registration at 8:45 a.m. and a talk on large motor activities by Dorothy Pinsky. Lunch follows at 11:30 to 1, with afternoon sessions on elder involvement and language development. Fee is $2, send to Jean Hood Johnson County Extension Service 3149 Highway 218 South Iowa City 52240 indicating the number of sessions to attend.
Paramount Pharmacies will sponsor free blood pressure checks in October, November, and December at multiple store locations. Elevated readings receive a recheck and a referral to the participant’s family physician. October times and addresses are listed, with repeating Tuesday and Wednesday dates in November and December.
