C R Woman Held on Murder Attempt Charge

Earl Roy Decker a 44 resident of 1203 Ninth Street NW remained in fair condition after being shot in the jaw in a car near his home just before midnight Friday. Sarah Anne Barnes 34 of 1111 Second Street SW was arrested at 1 19 a m at her home on charges of assault with intent to commit murder and held in Linn County jail in lieu of 50000 bond. Authorities said motive is unclear and there were no known witnesses to the shooting. Decker was found inside the front door of the Ninth Street address the residence of his separated wife after a 1159 p m call. The weapon had not been found and type is unknown. The slug remained in Decker at Saturday morning and police believe it was fired from a handgun.

Weather Lifts Iowa Corn and Soybean Yields in September

Des Moines AP reporting that September weather boosted Iowa corn and soybean yields by about three percent led by favorable conditions. Agriculture official Ray Halley cited frost risk and early harvest pace while noting drought cut overall state yields. Iowa corn yield projected around 89 bu/acre on 12 million acres harvest. soybean yield about 32 bu/acre from 222.4 million bushels total. Harvest underway with 12 percent of corn and 25 percent of soybeans collected. season expected to run into November.
