Wash Wins Upset Bid Stymied by Clinton 13-6

Washington high school edged Clinton 13-6 at Kingston Stadium in a hard fought football game. Washington opened with a 7-0 lead on a 3 yard run by Mike Hawk, Clinton tied late first quarter on a 13 yard pass from Charles Hindston to Bernard Adkins, final Washington TD came with 1:44 left as Dick Cumpston ran in after a Clinton interception. Washington dominated on the ground with 206 yards to Clinton’s 49, but miscues and penalties marred the Warriors’ bid.

Rams Hold Dubuque to 56 Yards in 7–0 Win

In Dubuque, Jefferson’s defense stifled the Rams holding Dubuque to 56 rushing yards and 56 passing yards. The only score came on a 2-yard Bruce Montgomery touchdown after a 37-yard drive. Jefferson failed to reach midfield more than twice, with multiple drives ending in fumbles and a lone late surge failing to convert.

Coe Freshmen Triumph Over Grinnell 12-0

Coe freshmen opened with a 12-0 victory at Grinnell. Larry Mansall returned a blocked punt 38 yards for the first score, after Reggis Gibson blocked the punt. Jim Meyer added a 7 yard TD late in the fourth quarter after a Grinnell fumble at the 20.

Iowa State Golf Course Renamed for George Veenker

The Iowa State University golf course will be named after former Cyclone football coach and athletic director George F. Veenker who died last month. The Iowa Board of Regents approved the name change on Friday. Veenker led football and served as athletic director from 1936 to 1945.

Marion Beats Monticello 27-13 In Wamac Action

Marion remains undefeated in Wamac play by beating Monticello 27-13 on the Panthers homecoming. Steve Miller stars for the Indians with two rushing touchdowns, a 43 yard run set up a score, and a key interception. Monticello answers with two first half scores but Marion pulls away late in the second quarter to take the lead and holds on.

Postville Prens Topple Elkader for Lead in Conference

Postville jumped into a first place tie with Elkader in the Upper Iowa conference by beating the Warriors 19 to 6. Postville produced three long drives for touchdowns with Ron Trudo catching a 14 yard pass from Dave Kiesau, Trudo scoring again from the 2 yard line after a 48 yard march, and Dave Smith adding a 13 yard TD run after a 50 yard drive.

Valley rolls Fayette 60 to 0 in UI Conference play

Valley high ended a two game skid with a 60 0 victory over Fayette in Upper Iowa Conference action. John Mitts rushed four times for touchdowns covering 24 42 25 and 10 yards. Sunny Kerr and Roger Torson added key scoring plays with Kerr scoring on 24 and 26 yard runs and Torson connecting with Roger Friden for 23 yards plus extra points.

West Union Edges West Central 19-13 in Last-Minute Win

West Union and West Central of Maynard met Friday with West Union scoring a late TD at the 15 second mark to seal a 19-13 victory. Jim Klinger ran for two touchdowns from 2 and 4 yards while Ron Peermann added a 5 yard score.

Sumner Defeats Waukon 37 to 12 in Conference Clash

Sumner throttled Waukon 37 to 12 in an Upper Iowa Conference game. Larry Warnke ran for two touchdowns on 31 and 65 yard carries and caught two passes for two more TDs. Roger Bock and Dennis Schult added scores, while George Hartley paced Waukon with two rushing TDs.

Vinton Cruises Past Manchester 20-6 for Wamac Lead

Vinton rolled to a 20-6 victory over Manchester to stay within a game of Marion atop the Wamac standings. Vinton struck in each of the first three quarters as Jack Mitchell scored twice and Ron Seiken added a TD. The Vik tings held Manchester scoreless until late in the game.

Tipton Secures 14-0 Homecoming Victory Over Maquoketa

Tipton improved to .500 in Wamac play with a 14-0 homecoming win over Maquoketa. The teams were scoreless at halftime before Tipton struck in the second half with TD runs by Mike Rodemeyer on 20 yards and Darrel Thumm from two yards. Ruel Wehde added the extra point.

Davenport Wins Valley Mile Team Race at Kingston Stadium

Davenport captured the Mississippi Valley conference mile team title at Kingston Stadium Friday. Dubuque’s Rob Johnson won the individual mile in 4 45.0, Washington finished fourth, Jefferson sixth in the varsity field, and Wildermuth of East Moline won the soph half mile in 2 08.5.
