Americans Increase Protein in Diet Say Experts

Cornell economist Frank A. Pearson notes a steady rise in protein consumption in the U S since the 1920s and 1930s from about one third to around 40 percent of total food pounds by the 1950s. In Iowa State College trials Wisconsin developed Vernal alfalfa outyielded Ranger, Buffalo, Atlantic, Grimm and Kansas Common by about 12 percent across 49 strains over four years. Iowa tests also showed Piper sudangrass at 2.6 tons per acre from three cuttings, with Wheeler at 2.69 tons though more leaf disease prone. Tift, Sweet, and Greenleaf produced lower yields.
