Marion Rallies to Defeat Manchester 34 to 12 in Front of Friday Crowd

Marion trumped Manchester 34 12 after an early Manchester TD as Ron Altenberg sparked a 62 yard score and Darrell Failor hooked up with Larry Brooks for another. Mane set up Manchester’s first, then Altenberg scored twice and Bob Wilson sealed it after a 50 yard march. Marion dominated, 348 rushing yards to 23 for Manchester, while Manchester held 114 26 passing.

Monticello Earns First Wamac Victory Over Independence

Two top ten Iowa high school football teams Ames and Carroll fell Friday in AP poll action. West Waterloo rallied to beat Ames 21-20 with Dion Welch adding the late extra point after Jim Bunning sparked the comeback with a 54 yard interception return. Denison upset Carroll 6-0 while Davenport routed Rock Island 35-6 to extend its streak. East Des Moines topped Mason City 35-20. Burlington overwhelmed Fort Madison 34-6. Franklin downed McKinley 25-6. St Ambrose visits Loras as Roosevelt and Newton square off. Other top teams Marion Shenandoah Heelan Leeds and Webster City also won.

Fayette Gets Fifth in Row Tops Waukon

Special to The Gazette Fayette stays undefeated in five straight by beating Waukon 34 to 14. QB Bob Johnson ran in a score and threw two long passes to Paul Richards for touchdowns. Jack Bright and Wayne Bentley added scores as Norman Fiet scored both Waukon touchdowns and the extra point.

Tama Takes Over Lead in Slowa Cedar 25-0

Tama seized the lead in the South Iowa Cedar league by routing Marengo 25-0. Ralph Zohrn spearheaded Tama’s effort with key runs that set up a one-yard TD by Ward. Tama tallied 13 points in the second quarter and added a TD in the third and fourth periods. End Weintzen anchored the defense from his end position.
