The Interstate Commerce Commission granted an emergency 10 percent rail freight rate increase and allowed Southern carriers to raise basic coach fares by 13.63 percent and parlor and sleeping car fares by 6.06 percent. The move adds about 125 million dollars in yearly revenue and applies to most commodities except coal coke and iron ore.

Cooler Weather Moves Into Iowa State
Cooler air moved into the state Tuesday night with Thursday temperatures near the morning low. A trace of rain fell in Cedar Rapids Tuesday night. The weather bureau forecast rain in the southwest and extreme west tonight and across most of the state Thursday. The September average temperature ran 2.6 degrees above normal with rainfall about two inches below normal. Conditions were generally favorable for maturing the Iowa corn crop.

Sprint for Bus Is Fatal to Man 26
George R. Gillpatrick 26 of 1727 First Ave SW collapsed after boarding a bus crowding a fare. He died en route to Mercy hospital from a heart attack. He was an accountant with Mc Gladrey Hansen Dunn and Company and served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He is survived by his wife Audrey Faye Martin and two daughters Nancy Ann and Susan Mary. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Coe College will obtain the full insurance payout of 120500 for the gutted Sinclair Memorial chapel. Of this amount 113000 goes to the building and 7500 to furnishings as reported to the ICoe board of trustees by legal representative Owen Elliott. The board approved building a new chapel and preserving the undamaged old entrance as a war memorial. They also dedicated the recreation room of the men’s gym to emeritus professor George W Byrant and planned memorials in the alumni publication. Tuition for 1948 49 was raised to 400 from 360.

Barthinius L Wick longtime Cedar Rapids authority on Linn County history died at 1 25 am Wednesday in St Luke s hospital He was 83 and had remained active in civic life despite a heart ailment He lived at 1314 B avenue NE and was a familiar Cedar Rapids figure for more than half a century Wick wrote histories of Linn County municipal government Cedar Rapids and the Amana society among others He was born in Stavanger Norway on February 29 1864 and came to the United States in 1876 His travels included Europe Hawaii and South America He planned to return to Europe in 1939 aboard the Athenia which was torpedoed and sunk later that year.
