Cedar Rapids eateries adopt President Truman’s food saving plan and go meatless on Tuesdays and eggless on Thursdays. Restaurateurs pledge observance, plan placards, and cooperate citywide, with menus adjusted at downtown spots.
Cedar Rapids school board will skip a fall bond issue and seek funding after January 1 1948 to finance part of its building program delaying two new high schools. The panel plans a bond election next winter to raise about 2 million for three elementary schools a stadium and renovations while authorizing bids again on the Arthur school addition.
Washington citizens food conservation committee averted a turkey shortage for Thanksgiving Christmas and New Year by declaring poultry and eggs should be observed on the Monday before the holidays. The 34 million 667 thousand turkey crop exceeds the 1939 43 average by about five percent and Tuesday meatless days continue.
A skinny black and white cat perched on a 35‑foot pole in Newark eluded multiple responders. Police and fire departments passed the rescue to the telephone company and Humane Society, which deferred to the public service division. A public worker climbed with spurs but the cat dived into an alley.

The London Star reports Prime Minister Attlee moved Emanuel Shinwell from the cabinet to war minister in a broad government shakeup. The change shifts Shinwell under the defense minister and signals a rightward reconstruction with several ministerial removals to follow.
Curtis Vincent 24 traveled from London to Greensboro North Carolina with his 10 month old son Van claiming no kidnapping occurred after his British wife left the child in someone else’s care. He arrived in New York by train and then flew to the Atlantic side with food milk and a soother to ease the journey. Vincent said the trip was less hard than expected and offered his wife a home in Greensboro or Talladega Alabama.
Coe college accepted a $110 contribution to its chapel fund from Cornell college during a Tuesday chapel service at Westminster Presbyterian church. Cornell student body president Bob Hawthorne presented the gift along with $603.57 from other Midwest Athletic Conference colleges, while Coe declined Cornell rival’s offer of the paint bucket symbol. A vandalized “Cornell Fights” graffiti appeared on the Coe gym steps this week.
The temperature rose to 86 at 1 30 p.m. Tuesday, marking a second straight day in the upper 80s. Cedar Rapids reached 88 Monday between 3 and 3 30 p.m., the warmest October reading in seven years, with 92 degree highs reported in Council Bluffs Newton and Des Moines. The forecast calls for clearing skies and cooler air, with a five day outlook near normal for temps and occasional rains Friday and Saturday.

Dorothy L. Anderson, an 18 year old former statehouse typist from Des Moines, says she will pursue a challenge to her firing by State Auditor Chet Akers over a demanded $2 monthly campaign contribution. Akers denies firing over the contribution and cites insubordination as the reason. An affidavit from Phillip Colaveccio and statements from Deputy Auditor Frank Hanson outline the dispute and alleged coercion, including threatened loss of vacation pay and raises. Anderson previously worked since January with a starting salary of 115 dollars, later 125 dollars per month.
Willis York, Republican State Chairman, questions charges from Dorothy Anderson that she was fired by Governor Chet Akers for not donating to party funds. Anderson says she was asked for 2 dollars monthly, with a dollar for the general fund. Akers says Anderson quit and denies any firing.

Mid-Continent Airlines plans a new Cedar Rapids to Twin Cities and St Louis route to be heard by the Civil Aeronautics Board on or before February 23. The Cedar Rapids Airport Commission and Chamber of Commerce will be notified, with local groups preparing briefs supporting the service.
Cleveland AP report describes Steve Laska 19 opening a newly bought used car trunk to find six bombs. Police scene included a squad car ballistics experts and detectives. Investigation showed the car’s former owner was a fireworks manufacturer who left behind sample devices.
The NLRB, in a 4 to 1 decision, says top AFL and CIO officers need not sign non Communist affidavits under Taft Hartley. The ruling narrows required affidavits to officers of unions and locals, easing pressure on AFL amid union leadership disputes and a looming convention.

The Gazette faced a major delay when the press motor failed near the city edition run. At 5 30 p m it was estimated repairs would take three hours, carriers were sent home and asked to return at 8 30. By 8 25 the press restarted and delivery resumed.
