Chamber backs merge of city and county governments
Cedar Rapids leaders heard a merger advocate say public backing hinges on belief in a single vision and better outcomes. Former Louisville mayor Jerry Abramson noted two 1980s attempts failed due to distrust, while last year’s vote showed 56 percent approval when framed as boosting community issues and economic development. The plan envisions a metro council elected by county voters, not replacing towns’ city governments. About 50 attendees heard that merged governance can attract major employers like KFC’s parent, though change faces local resistance. Mayors and supervisors attended along with state representatives.
