Iowa also saw a September jobless rate of 2.8 percent, with 29,900 unemployed, a large monthly drop and gains in retail, services, and government.
Maryland Governor Marvin Mandel was sentenced to four years in prison for his role in a mail fraud racketeering scheme. Co defendants W. Dale Hess Irv Kovens Ernest M. Corey Jr and William A and Harry W Rodgers III saw charges reduced after hearings. Mandel faces loss of office though title remains. acting governor Blair Lee to continue.
The Miami jury finds 15 year old Ronny Zamora guilty of first degree murder in the death of an elderly woman. Foreman John Kateb calls the defense claim that violent TV drove Zamora insane ridiculous. Jurors say upbringing influenced the decision. life in prison considered over death penalty.
The Senate rejected an amendment to keep 16 to 19 year olds on the higher minimum wage as part of a plan to reach 3.40 by 1981. The vote showed labor backing to keep teens on the same pay scale as older workers. House action earlier backed a rising minimum wage through 1981, with conference differences to be resolved.
