INDEPENDENCE AP Major General Fred Walker dies of cancer after commanding the 5th Infantry in Italy during World War I. Three people were injured in a four car crash on Highway 11 in Independence at 2:45 P.M. Monday. Autor Cromwell, 04, from Fithian, Illinois. John Schafer, 61, from Mason City, Wisconsin. Merlin J. Raymond, from Garnavilla. and Teobert Zinmerly, 42, from Independence were involved. Damages listed include 2000 to Cromwell, 3000 to Zinmerly, 600 to Schafer, and 50 to Raymond. Neck injuries reported for Schafer, Raymond, and Zinmerly. Raymond also sustained abdominal injuries. Schafer reportedly failed to stop in the assured distance ahead.

By 4:30 p.m. his mother reported him back at the family home and officers then recaptured him for handover to army authorities from Omaha due Tuesday afternoon.
