Dr. Margaret Sherlock Pilcher of Joliet Illinois has donated Prospect Place a 40 room house at Ninth street and Sixteenth avenue SW to the Sisters of Mercy to run a convalescent hospital for Cedar Rapids residents. The transfer occurred Thursday and the sisters who run Mount Mercy and Mercy hospitals and other facilities plan to open next year pending financing. In Chicago Mrs. Gert rude Epstein age 22, an infantile paralysis victim who delivered a baby daughter while in an iron lung at Mount Sinai Hospital, died Friday from heart paralysis. The infant was reported to be doing well.
In Frankfort Kentucky Governor A B Chandler will resign Monday and be appointed United States senator by Lieutenant Governor Keen Johnson who will become acting governor thereafter. The move follows a high official source stating Chandler will take the Senate seat and Johnson will replace him as chief executive.
London reports quote Admiralty as calling a Berlin tip that the liner Iroquois would be sunk too absurd to deny. The Iroquois carried 566 Americans plus 212 crew from Cobh and Liverpool, with evacuees fleeing European war. US Ambassador Kennedy said he is in close touch with both governments amid Raeder warning.
