A ruptured ammonia transfer released 3 000 gallons vapor over four blocks in Gibson forcing about 100 schoolchildren and most residents to abandon the town. Fire crews capped the leak while What Cheer doctors treated several residents for headaches eye irritation and lung pain with no serious injuries reported.
The Iowa Congress of Parents and Teachers will hold its annual meeting October 11 and 12 at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. President Mrs Harold Honohan will deliver the keynote at the first general session. Speakers include Joseph A Hunter Dr Lindley J Stiles Dr Guy Wagner and J C Wright along with local officials.
Iowa City Shrine equipment pool at the Hospital School for severely handicapped children on the University of Iowa campus received a 500 dollar donation this week from the Royal American Shrine club. The pool loans equipment to young patients returning home and to other handicapped children in the state, bringing total donations to 1,000 dollars including last December’s gifts. Robert Leavnbaugh chairs the pool committee and urges statewide cooperation to make it an Iowa proposition. Wayne D. Grantham, clinical psychologist at the Hospital, comments on impact.
Mary Trump, 45, of New Boston died at University Hospitals from injuries after an auto crash near Keokuk. She was alone driving on Highway 218 when her car went out of control on a curve. The mother of a seven month old child, she was returning from a bowling match. Survivors include her husband and child.
The pool administrator said equipment bought with Shriners funds is for short term rehabilitation needs. Items available include carts to aid polio and cerebral palsy patients, table model hearing aids, and special eating equipment, all checked out and returned like library books.
Morley mayor Arden Ach enbach announced on Tuesday he will not seek another term. Councilman O. S. Russell also stated he will not run again. For the November 8 election, incumbents J. N. Parks H. Duane Smith R. Harlan Bickerstaff and Mervin Switzer seek re election as councilmen, with Don Nicoll running for treasurer.
Special to The Gazette Strawberry Point reports only council candidate W C Fenton has filed for re election. Other councilmen C C Huntley Adolph Schuchman Loren James and William Leachman as well as Mayor Phil Wood have not stated plans. Election is Nov 8 with Oct 11 filing deadline.
District Judge Charles Penningroth directed Cedar County jurors to return a verdict for Robert McClellan of Stanwood in a liquor case. McClellan faced charges of keeping liquor on premises covered by a class B beer permit at Highway Gardens tavern and dance hall. The judge ruled the permit form failed to define the exact premises. A raid on May 7 led to liquor seizure from patrons. McClellan had pleaded innocent.
Judy Kay Sandhagen, 3, daughter of Mr and Mrs Jim Sandhagen, died Tuesday during a heart operation at University hospitals Iowa City. She had a congenital heart ailment. Services set for Thursday at 1 30 p m at Gill funeral home and 2 p m at First Lutheran church. Surviving are her parents a sister Janet and a brother Jerry Lee.

Des Moines AP reports September cigarette tax receipts fell about 54 000 from August while beer revenue rose about 20 000. Compared with September last year cigarette taxes were down about 9 000 and beer taxes up about 51 000. The state tax commission took in 600 681 from cigarettes and 348 232 from beer.
