Six persons injured when two cars collide on U S highway 218 just south of North Liberty around 7 30 p m. Mrs Alec Young and her sons Robert Culver Bruce Wilbur hospitalized with cuts bruises and broken legs. Harold Jones of Cedar Rapids injured with leg and chest wounds. Patrol and county sheriff investigated wreck. both cars were completely wrecked.
Mrs Ereella Sanders twenty one of Lisbon was injured in a spat at a dance and taken to Mercy hospital with a gash between the eyes. The attending doctor reported brain concussion and possible broken nose. Wayne Sanders twenty was booked on a technical charge after admitting he struck his wife when she attempted to enter his car following an argument over another woman.
A Saturday poll shows Senate leaning toward some modification to the neutrality law but faces strong opposition to changes. President Roosevelt plans talks with party leaders next Tuesday as uncertainty lingers among uncommitted members about arms for merchant ships and belligerent ports.
The 48th Ordnance Company of the 41st Field Artillery rolled into Cedar Rapids from Aberdeen Proving Grounds to Fort Francis E. Warren Wyoming. Soldiers, many from Brooklyn, queried the Brooklyn Dodgers status as they toured western Iowa. The self sustaining unit carries full machine shop capability and plans to reach their post by midweek.
Oslo reports Josef Terboven warned Norway to join Germany in the war or face disappearance as a nation and possible starvation. Stockholm’s Social Demokraten notes over 2,000 Norwegians are in three camps and hundreds more imprisoned.
Washington on Saturday Budget Director Harold D. Smith raised defense spending for the current fiscal year to 18 billion dollars, up 2.5 billion from four months earlier. He noted the cost equates to 135 dollars per person in the United States and forecasts monthly defense outlays rising toward 2 billion by next June while borrowing will offset the deficit.
The OPM directed fire engine makers to remove bells from new engines, arguing an ordinary siren suffices and saves material for defense. The prohibition was part of a broader material-saving program announced by Douglas C. MacKeachie, director of purchases.

At Devil's Tower Wyoming mountaineers paced Friday night to reach George Hopkins stranded 865 feet up since last Wednesday. Rain and snow threaten climbs but plans call for a Goodyear blimp from Akron to aid in lowering Hopkins via rope ladder as forecasts warn of prolonged ascent if freezing rain hits.
Grant Dunne 48, leader of a CIO union faction, was indicted for plotting to overthrow the US government by force. He died Saturday night from a self-inflicted gunshot at his Minneapolis residence.
Soviet officials claimed a sweeping victory across the Arctic to the Black Sea with heavy casualties for German Romanian and Finnish troops. They said major enemy forces were shattered and ground retaken as counterattacks rolled across Ukraine and the Crimea. A German operation was reported near Moscow while Hitler hinted Molotov may no longer be in Moscow.
