First American Receives Heart Transplant in India
Ron Lemmer of Prior Lake Minnesota became what is believed to be the first American heart transplant recipient in India at Apollo Hospital Chennai after traveling abroad seeking donor organs. The 65 year old waited years on a U S list before choosing the Indian program. He received the heart of a 36 year old laborer and recovered rapidly, discharged in 10 days, with ongoing questions about anonymity and global medical travel.
