Hartford AP report shows college students find newspapers most accurate and fair among media. They cite campus unrest, riots, Negro and slum issues, and Vietnam as examples, and spend about seven hours weekly with newspapers compared with TV and radio.
The Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra disclosed a five year expansion plan at a Thursday night briefing led by Larry Buchannan. The plan targets better administration, broader programming, new musical direction, growth in youth programs, and a wider financial base with support from press and broadcast representatives.
Scott county District Judge James Havercamp denied a habeas corpus petition by David Goldsmith 44 of Moline clearing a path for his extradition to Wyoming. Goldsmith faces fugitive from justice and accessory before the fact of murder charges in the death of two business partners. He was arrested Aug 17 and jailed on a 100000 bond. extradition warrant was signed by Gov. Robert Ray.
Kennedy high school festivities featured 17 year old Kandi Parsons as homecoming queen during halftime of the Bettendorf game. Escort Steve Ridge assisted after the crown fell as Parsons savored an apple amid the celebration following a Kennedy loss.
A report alleges a murder for hire plot in Wyoming involving two Cedar Rapids businessmen, Robert Stucker and Larry Olinger, with ties to a failed partnership. The case centers on a suspected contract and the accused orchestrator.
INDIANAPOLIS AP Mailman Curtis Parks, 53, was interrupted during deliveries when two dog catchers leapt from a municipal dog pound truck to seize three dogs following him. Parks protested, was involved in a tavern dispute, and was charged with disorderly conduct, fleeing a policeman, and resisting arrest. The dogs escaped.
Royal Air Force bomb disposal experts plan incendiary bombs in the carcass to dispose of a four ton whale that washed ashore near Holyhead Wales. Spokesmen said the blubber would fuel the flames as the bombs detonate.
Two North Liberty men were admitted to Mercy hospital in Cedar Rapids Friday morning after a head on collision on highway 218 three miles south of Cedar Rapids. Richard C. Meade and Dennis R. Jefferies, both in fairly good condition, suffered chest and face lacerations. Meade was northbound with a horse trailer. Jefferies was southbound and attempting to pass in fog. The crash occurred at 7:30 a.m.
A Tama Iowa area car crash injured three people when the steering column dropped from the dash of a car driven by Jerry Simmons 21. His wife Vickie suffered a leg bruise while Crystal Martinez of Grinnell had leg and cheek bruises. Three month old Raymond Martinez was unharmed.
Robert M. Francis of 3314 Shastacourt NE was charged with failure to yield the right of way after turning in front of Gary D. Holub in Central City at First avenue and Collins road NE. Francis suffered a head injury and was treated at St. Luke's hospital. Burnita M. Kirchmann of 1021 Hill drive SE was charged with failure to yield at a stop intersection after a two car crash at Sixth avenue and Eighth street SW involving Herschel E. Orr. Orr's wife Ida, 71, suffered a head injury and was treated at Mercy hospital.
Stockholm Interior Minister Eric Holmqvist stated on Friday that Sweden would take in United States Vietnam era deserters and draft dodgers for humanitarian motives rather than as a gesture toward the United States. He emphasized Sweden's humanitarian policy and denied political concessions.
