Newton man surrenders after two-hour standoff with police
In Newton, 21-year-old Robert Mickle held officers at bay for nearly two hours at his wife's home. Police used tear gas to force him out. he surrendered and was jailed on assault with intent to commit murder charges. Mickle menaced his wife and one-year-old child with a shotgun and a .22 rifle, firing at officers but injuring none while damaging two squad cars.

Calf-Hunting Plane Crash Kills Two Near Hartley Iowa
Two men volunteering to look for a missing calf died when a single engine Cessna 140 crashed nose down into a soybean field about three miles south of Hartley Iowa. Pilot Eldred Frick, 45, and passenger Loren Polson, 43, were killed instantly. The Hartley Flying Club owned the plane. Federal and county investigators pursued the crash cause.

Enrollment climbs to 20,326 at Iowa University

State Revises Speed Zones in Buchanan Area
The Iowa highway commission updated speed limits on highways 20 and 150 around Independence in Buchanan County. Highway 20 becomes 45 mph west of Independence and through town, with a series of 35 30 and 45 mph zones along Tenth and adjacent avenues. On 150, northbound slows to 45 mph toward Independence, with 30 mph near the south corporate limits and 45 mph briefly outside the north limits.

DES MOINES IDPA Speaker William Harbor says interim legislative committees are serving a useful purpose amid criticism of many meetings. More than 50 committees and subcommittees meet during the interim, with cost estimates around 100000 dollars. Harbor notes this is about one tenth of one percent of the state budget and could save nearly 100000 dollars by shortening the session if recommendations trim time. Loot Totals $2 021 In Anamosa Breakin
ANAMOSA An inventory completed late Wednesday showed that loot taken in a breakin at the Fawn Creek Country club totaled $2 021 70 in value. The loss included $200 worth of new golf balls and $40 in change. The burglars first went to a storage shed one eighth mile east of the country club and stole an ax and maul. They hauled away the new golf clubs jackets sweaters and balls in a golf bag pull cart.
