Carcass Hog Buying May Be More Accurate Say Iowa Researchers
Iowa Farm Economist summarizes Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station findings by Shepherd and Beard that carcass grade buying could improve price accuracy over live-weight methods. The Ames study of 100 Good to Choice hogs shows wide cut-out value variation despite uniform appearance, with the top 50 worth about 50 cents more per hundredweight than the bottom 50, while overall Good and Choice spreads are smaller. The report notes corroboration by packer tests and ILEx hogs, and discusses Canada-style implementation and potential solutions.
