Jazz great Lionel Hampton and 12 band members were injured, some seriously, in a bus crash on US 85, 26 miles south of Socorro New Mexico. Captain Ernest Tafoya said several victims were rushed up to 100 miles to reach hospitals. Hampton suffered a broken left ankle and others were in very bad shape, including the bus driver. The bus carried 26 people.
