Soviet and Allied dispatches report defenders of Leningrad seizing the initiative by crossing the Neva and routing about 15 000 German troops. Berlin claimed German gains in the Leningrad sector despite heavy casualties. Meanwhile on the Ukraine front German advances near the Donets basin were contested and Soviet air forces claimed success against German planes and gliders.
In Des Moines a concrete block and a stink bomb, not functioned, were hurled through a window of an apartment building. A second block hit the window sill at Sam Park’s Bishop cafeteria home. Walter Weber, former Bishop assistant manager, lived nearby. The union bakers’ local has picketed the cafeteria during a recent strike.
Lakeland Ga police disclosed a would be kidnap plan against former Georgia governor E D Rivers. The attacker Horace W Bible, armed in a trailer setup, died by suicide after Rivers and his wife fought him off. Police found letters detailing motives for ransom and vengeance. Rivers endured scalp lacerations. Mrs Rivers had facial injuries. The incident followed Rivers term ending last December amid political turmoil.
Cedar Rapids and vicinity expect occasional rain Thursday night and Friday with a warm Thursday night and a cooler Friday. Southeast to northeast winds 20 to 30 mph shift to northwest Friday, with humidity around 80 percent and temperatures peaking near 76 earlier in the week before falling to the mid 50s by early Friday morning.

Lord Beaverbrook and W Averell Harriman said the wartime aid conference concluded two days early and will be matched by rapid Soviet supply deliveries. Jones urged extending lend lease, revealing $20 000 600 more to the Soviets for American war materials. Molotov announced unanimous agreement and left technical aides to aid future supply handling.
INDIANAPOLIS Ind Delegates to the American Bar Association convention Thursday rejected a near unanimous impeachment resolution against President Roosevelt over war aims. Authors argued for challenging constitutional acts, but the measure was deemed outside the associations powers. The group also rejected a nationwide referendum on war and referred a neutrality act repeal to the international law section.
Edmund H Eitel of the priorities division of the OPM told Cedar Rapids attendees how to obtain priority materials for small manufacturers. He outlined four aims to ease shortages by boosting domestic production, finding nearer raw materials, seeking substitutes, and reclaiming junked materials. Local officials framed plans for a permanent Iowa executive committee during the afternoon session.
Ottawa reports domestic production of radios refrigerators stoves vacuum cleaners and electric washing machines has fallen to 75 percent of 1940 levels as the department of munitions and supply announced on Wednesday night.
Dr G Leonard Harrington of the University of Kansas told doctors at the Mississippi Valley Medical society meeting that fear drives neurotics. George Hopkins of Rapid City South Dakota perched atop Devil's Tower in Wyoming after leaping from a plane on a wager with Early Brockersby. A rope failed during the descent leaving Hopkins to navigate the 600 foot drop to the basalt summit and await calmer winds for a three hour trek down.
The American Bankers Association voted a general endorsement of the government’s defense program and pledged full support in carrying it out.
