Plan urged to secure Social Security funds and avert cuts
The Gazette editorial highlights that Social Security Trust Funds stood at 2.8 trillion dollars at year end and will be drawn down to pay full benefits, with reserves depleting by 2034 unless Congress acts. It warns of a potential 25 percent benefit cut, affecting over 600,000 Iowans, and urges public discussion and possible phased revenue increases, including payroll tax hikes. The piece promotes AARP Iowa efforts and an upcoming forum at The Hotel at Kirkwood Center with registration details.
