The Gazette reports Cedar Rapids ends evacuation area access at noon today with full zone reopening at 7 a.m. Saturday. Mayor Ron Corbett thanks residents for voluntary evacuation and notes Cedar River crest near 22 feet and receding toward major flood stage.
Barriers blocking flood waters around Cedar Rapids downtown are to be removed by Saturday morning as the First through Eighth avenue bridges reopen. City officials said evacuation zones will resume and public transit will restart, with Edgewood Road crossing restored earlier in the week.
Signatures appear Thursday on a sandbag wall surrounding the Paul Sale property at 83 16th Ave SW in the Czech Village district. Residents gathered as flood protections were installed around the building.
More than 300000 sandbags were deployed to fend off floodwaters. Cedar Rapids officials announce free sandbag drop offs at Noelridge Aquatic Center parking lot starting today and at Ellis Park tennis courts starting Saturday. Volunteers urged. check cedar-rapids.org for open status due to a berm.
