Record Hog Market Weekend Direct Sales Break Marks
Iowa and southern Minnesota markets processed 92 200 direct hogs over the weekend across 25 buying stations and seven packing plants. The total surpassed all previous Monday totals this year and last year, with Chicago listing 45 000 hogs that Monday and 25 000 direct hogs. Traders blamed the shift on the central marketing system’s weaknesses as hogs moved direct to slaughter, driven by high home bids and a late week spark from packers short of hogs. Farmers and packers weighed the factors behind the surge as feeders rushed to market while prices allowed.
