Linn County Buys 485 Acres for Parks and Trails
Linn County supervisors announce a 7.2 million purchase of 485 acres north and south of Gardner Golf Course from the Sutherland Dows Family Trust. The land will bolster Squaw Creek Park with water protection areas and trail connections to Sac and Fox and Grant Wood networks. County aims to protect conservation land while reserving some parcels for future private development. An adjacent Marion wetland and water-treatment project is planned, with possible future acquisition of the golf course area between parcels.

Judge to decide Haglin fate next month in sexual exploitation case
Former Washington High substitute teacher Mary Beth Haglin agrees to a judge ruling on her aggravated misdemeanor charge. Judge Kevin McKeever will base verdict on minutes of testimony including a 17 year old student interview and Haglin’s police interview. Prosecutors moved Haglin from a potential felony to the aggravated misdemeanor after media interviews. The minutes, not public, will be filed in about a month with a court verdict announced in open court. Haglin faces up to two years in prison or a 625 to 6250 dollars fine plus 10 years on the sex offender registry. She taught at Washington from January 1 to May 17. The judge affirmed Haglin’s status as district employee and noted a stipulation trial is uncommon but possible.
