Supreme Court rules meal allowances taxable income for troopers

The Supreme Court ruled 7 to 2 that state troopers must report cash meal allowances as gross income on federal tax returns. The decision, based on a New Jersey case, affects about 10,000 troopers across several states and about $10 million yearly. Justice Brennan wrote the opinion, reversing a lower court that had allowed cash meals to be tax exempt.

New figures show sharp income rise in 1975

Washington AP reports the median income of American families was 14094 in 1975, up over 4000 from five years earlier. Alaska led with 22432, Mississippi lowest at 9999, and the 1970 median stood at 9876 as the Census Bureau releases state by state data.

Subversive Korean memo alleges U S subversion plan

A UPI report says a House subcommittee released an alleged KCIA memo detailing a 750000 operation aimed at subverting the White House Congress and top U S military and diplomatic circles. The 24 page document, drafted in 1975 in Washington and approved in Seoul, is linked to plans for outright subversion in 1976.

Thief Steals 12 Diamond Rings From Newton's Jewelry

A woman described as black, about 29, five feet six inches, 130 pounds, fled Newton's Jewelry Co after attempting to view items. She came back, grabbed a tray with 14 rings, and ran. Two rings were found on the sidewalk. her purse, left behind, contained a pen a dime and a 13 cent stamp. No arrests by early today.
