Trade gap hits record as dock strike trims exports

The United States posted the largest monthly trade deficit in October as a dock strike reduced exports to 9.2 billion, while imports eased to 12.3 billion. Economists foresee an annual deficit of 27 to 30 billion amid ongoing oil reliance and overtime labor tensions.

Cedar Rapids Inflation Eases in Q3 but Rises Yearly

Cedar Rapids saw a 0.5 percent price rise in the third quarter, slowing inflation from the prior quarter. Year over year prices are 7.1 percent higher, with notable drops in food and transport costs offset by a 3.6 percent rise in apparel. Housing up 1 percent in July-October, utilities up 11.5 percent year over year. Earnings rose $7.90 weekly, while real purchasing power gained $3.80 a week this quarter but fell $1.99 over the year. Health and recreation costs up 1.7 percent this quarter. The report notes changes in federal price methodology and city sampling.
