Copper Sulfate Boosts Pig Growth in Iowa Trials
Iowa State researchers led by J A Hawbaker report copper sulfate in pig finishing rations at 1 to 3 pounds per ton increases daily gains by over seven percent and lowers feed per pound of gain. In trials, 2 pounds per ton yielded the best gains, 1.44 lb daily with 12.66 lb feed per lb gain, and copper appears to drive fungal control rather than the sulfate itself. When combined with antibiotics, gains rise additively, while adding antifungal drugs to copper did not further improve performance.
