Budget gap projected at 1.07 billion for Iowa in 2011
Des Moines Bureau reports that Iowa lawmakers must close a 1.07 billion funding gap when crafting the fiscal 2011 budget. Built in spending tops revenues by 1.07 billion under the 99 percent spending cap, with 141 million in one time stimulus and 541 million in reserves cited as balancing aids. Senate leader Gronstal cautions a tough year and possible scaling back of commitments.

Geezer football ref collapses during college game
Ike Mallberg the 60 year old Adel man known for ge ere br 'geezer ball' officiated the Cornell College versus Grinnell College game at Rosenbloom Field on Sept 5. He collapsed on the sidelines after saying he would take a few plays off. Teammate and Cornell staff described convulsions as medics rushed to aid him.

Material witnesses in Agriprocessors cases to be released
Twenty four undocu mented former Agripro cessors workers designated as material witnesses in criminal cases will be released. Most are likely to be deported, with timing uncertain. The workers had faced deportation after plea deals tied to the May 2008 Postville raid. They held deferred actions to serve as witnesses in cases against former Agriprocessors Vice President Sholom Rubashkin, whose immigration charges were dismissed after a bank fraud conviction.
