All-State Musicians Chosen From Cedar Rapids Schools

The all-state band and orchestra will feature 30 Cedar Rapids community school members in Des Moines for the annual concert. Selection honors Iowa high school instrumental music students, with only about one percent chosen after auditions. The 280-member band and 220-member orchestra rehearse Friday and Saturday, then perform Saturday at KRNT Theater under the Iowa High School Music Assn. and Iowa Music Educators Assn. A concert tape will air on WMT-TV at 3 p.m. Dec 13.

FTC challenges claims by two toy makers

The Federal Trade Commission charged Mattel Inc and Topper Corp with exaggerating toy appearances and performances in ads for Mattel's Hot Wheels racing car and track set and Dancer in a Doll, and Topper's Johnny Lightning set. The Mattel claim also alleges the doll does not walk or dance by itself. FTC Chairman Miles Kirkpatrick cited a consumer survey showing complaints about nondelivery, false advertising, and mispricing.

Mother pays 27000 ransom after child snatch in Rouen

In Rouen France police report a 15 month old boy kidnapped Monday by a new maid was recovered unharmed in an apartment stairway after the mother Mrs Danise Veillard of Paris paid 27000 in ransom. The payment instructions were relayed by telephone and the ransom left in an attaché case on a Paris street.

Jerry Ray Cleared In Shooting Youth

Jerry William Ray brother of James Earl Ray was acquitted by a Savannah jury of aggravated assault in the shooting of 17 year old Steven Donald Black. Ray said he acted in self defense after catching Black stealing records from the National States Rights party headquarters where Ray worked as a security guard. Black survived a chest wound.

YMCA Holiday Program At Central Branch Friday

Youth Director Dwight Belknap announced a YMCA holiday program at the Central branch Friday. The game lobby opens at 11 30 a.m. with a 50 cent bean feed at noon. Tournaments in the lobby feature ping pong, checkers, chess and pool starting 12 45 p.m. A fun swim occurs at 2 00 and the regular Friday gym and swim activities resume at 4.
