Iowa City study to map river pollutant dispersion
University of Iowa researchers launch an $86 167 project to model how channel bends and pollutant buoyancy affect downstream dispersion. Led by Profs Enzo Macagno and William Sayre, the study uses a 90 foot winding channel and an analog to digital computer to translate salt tracer data into dispersion formulas for wastes from sewage plants and other contaminants. Participants include John F Kennedy and graduate students C V Alonso Y C Chang and S Fukuoka.

Safety Expert Criticizes Plan for Oversize Trucks on Iowa Interstates
Safety expert Dr. George W. Brown of the University of Iowa challenges the highway commission’s proposal to allow oversize trucks on Iowa interstates. He cites traffic casualties, bridge bottlenecks, and higher accident rates as key dangers, urging rejection of permanent and temporary permits for long trucks and urging scrutiny of economic justifications. Brown notes Iowa’s 215,633 traffic casualties and 5,904 deaths in 1960 67, and warns slow moving heavy trucks would worsen hazards on a high speed, bridge limited system.
