Flu strain at Marshalltown raises concern over infant meningitis
Health officials in Marshalltown report an outbreak of a flu strain linked to meningitis in four infants, including a 7 month old who died. Public health nurse Mary Lou LaPour says vaccine shortages limit immunizations though it does not protect children under two. State epidemiologist Dr Laverne Wintermeyer notes no evidence of increased virulence and cites a lower statewide meningitis trend this year.
