In Bedford Iowa AP report says Harriet Cannaday 21 of Sioux City and Lena Cannaday 18 of Fort Dodge are jailed on lar mot veh charges after separate stolen car chases. They face sentencing in Creston District Court and are linked to thefts across multiple states and alleged FBI clerical job acceptance.
Anonymous donor promises $100 to St Mark's Episcopal Church Des Moines if capacity is reached on the next two Sundays. Dr Theodore J Schneider rector said Saturday services will be at 11 a.m. with seating capacity limited.
Decorah Edward Bear 74 president of Ben Bear Clothing Co died Saturday afternoon in Decorah hospital from a heart attack. Born in Germany he came to the United States in 1890 to aid his brother Ben Bear who came in 1876 and started a local store. Bear celebrated his arrival and business anniversary last year. Surviving wife Pearl Marcus married in 1907 in Chicago and a son Edward Jr in Saginaw, Mich. Funeral arrangements not yet completed.
Audubon County Attorney Dale Levis blasted the local system after a district court jury freed a man charged with a second drunk driving offense. He said the state has not secured a conviction in a drunk driving case in the county for more than 20 years and criticized juries for not taking their duties seriously.
Roland E. Minnick, a 53 year old Mt. Vernon meat cutter, sues his employer Rudolph E. Vodicka for 50 thousand dollars alleging a beating on October 20 left him with brain concussion, paralysis on the right side, and multiple facial fractures. Minnick seeks 30 thousand dollars for pain and disability and 20 thousand for exemplary damages. a jury trial is requested. Vodicka faced assault charges but remains free on bond as Minnick remains hospitalized.
In Davenport burglars struck Midway bowling alleys early Saturday stealing a 600 pound safe containing about $1,000. Police suspect the same Davenport Bettendorf and Illinois gang active in recent months. An officer noted no forced entry and a getaway vehicle used to haul the safe away.
Iowa fish story details L. G. Krumm of Decorah who as of 1951 Nov 16 had caught 456 trout this season, aiming to exceed his 1950 total of 504. He reports daily fishing, mostly on Trout Run, using a fly rod, catching brook brown and rainbow trout, with several memorably large catches and one odd episode involving a lid.
In Delhi a Bronze Star was presented to Pfc. Olaf P. Pulver’s parents by Col. Thomas H. Tracey for his act of heroism in Korea. Pulver, the first Delaware County man killed in action, took over a machine gun after comrades were wounded, saving the platoon before he fell. He left a mother who said she shared every mother’s sorrow.
Plaza hotel manager Jack Ford announced a new nursery and free baby-sitting service for guests. The plan follows a recent fire caused by a child using a cigarette lighter. no injuries were reported.
A burglary at the Farmers' Cooperative in Clear Lake yielded about seven dollars taken from a cash drawer. The thief left a window open, freezing water pipes and causing damage. A hidden two hundred dollars remained unfound. Mrs. Virgil Evanson, the manager's wife and keeper, described the scene.
Indianapolis AP reports 53 Iowa American Legion members named to national commissions and committees for 1952 by National Commander Donald R. Wilson. Des Moines duo Howard W. Brooks and Ray O. Gerber receive posts, with numerous Iowan appointments across Child Welfare, Americanism, security training, and other boards.
A. H. Christensen, a Drake University law student, reported losing two rings on campus November 16 valued at 1225 dollars. One ring was a wedding band and the other a diamond ring. he had placed them in his pocket because they hurt his finger.
