Secretary of State Marshall signaled caution in U S policy toward China while backing continued aid to Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist government. He outlined hurdles for larger intervention, cited U N progress, and noted risks of provoking a Soviet response amid Berlin and Ruhr disputes.
In Nanking officials express disappointment with Secretary Marshall after brief remarks on China. They hoped for a new United States program to assist Chiang Kai-shek’s armies north of Nanking as the battle for Suchow and the approaches to the capital continued.
A Trans World Airlines Constellation burned after landing at Municipal airport in Los Angeles. All 21 aboard escaped with crew rescuing 16 passengers via an emergency ladder. Two passengers suffered back injuries. no other injuries reported.
Prague court sentenced eight men on espionage charges tied to the American counter intelligence corps. Miroslav Chocroom and Slavoj Sadek are named among those condemned. the others had reportedly fled to Germany.
Miss Amanda Stassart of Brussels met two American flyers, Thomas Applewhite and Thelma Wiggins, who credit her with guiding them from Mons to Paris in 1943. She led 65 Allied airmen to safety, survived Ravensbrück and Mauthausen, and was released in 1945 after years in concentration camps.

Athens (UP) Premier Themistocles Sofoulis, 88, was reported improving steadily Thursday after a heart attack Wednesday night in his office. He was placed in bed in his office, converted into a hospital room, as doctors feared moving him might be fatal.
Friday marks Cedar Rapids big Christmas parade with Santa arriving by midget racer on a float, candy throws by helpers, and 26 floats plus 40 costumed figures. Five bands and Allied Industrial League king and queen appear, parade routes through downtown, prizes offered for non commercial and individual floats, new entries accepted until 9 a.m. Friday.
About 1,400 passengers aboard the Queen Elizabeth were informed they would sail to New York at 8 a.m. Sunday after the New York dock strike ended. The crisis began when Captain Ford ordered a return to London for some and a sit-in protest by cabin and tourist classes. A group of 400 first class passengers prepared to join, and 98 Elizabeth passengers left on the Empress of France for Halifax.
The All-Iowa Agricultural Association’s executive committee voted to extend the 1949 fair to eight days at Hawkeye Downs. The Aug 14 to Aug 21 schedule adds a draft horse show alongside the dairy, pig congress, and sheep shows. Manager Andy Hanson and VP R H Buresh travel to Chicago to secure entertainment for the event.
In Kenosha Wisconsin two armed men robbed a Household Finance Company after forcing an employee to make two bank trips. They first took $150 from the safe then coerced clerk Helen Duskiewicz to withdraw $1,000 from the First National Bank and later cash a $1,200 check written to her. The pair fled after collecting endorsed checks.
A US Navy airframe carrying six Americans went missing but landed safely at Port Lyautey Morocco, after departing Lisbon. The Lisbon airport reported the incident on Thursday and authorities began checks on the crew and passengers.
Negotiators reached a settlement on terms to end the East Coast dockworkers strike now in its sixteenth day. The deal calls for a 13 cent hourly raise retroactive to August 21 for about 65,000 workers, pending ratification by union members.
San Francisco negotiators for striking CIO longshoremen and waterfront employers reached a tentative agreement on three basic issues. Additional talks were scheduled for Friday to continue working out details.
Governor Thomas E. Dewey and his wife arrived in New York from Tucson by air liner and headed for the Dewey Pawling farm for Thanksgiving. He reported good health and rest, noted his golf scores in the upper 80s, and avoided political talk while saying he worked on his 1949 New York legislature message. The party included their sons Tommy and John and secretary Paul Lockwood.
Game Warden C E Read arrested Stanley E Bourassa of Minneapolis for improperly cased gun in his car. Bourassa, safety director for an automotive group, noted Read’s car had 1949 plates violating the law. Justice Frank W Preston dismissed both cases after hearings.
