The government reported the first decrease in living costs in seven months. The Bureau of Labor Statistics released the figures as President Truman announced Edwin G. Nourse as chairman of his Economic Council.
New York report says the wholesale food price index for the week ended Tuesday rose by 1 cent to 6.38, yet remains 9.6 percent below the year-earlier level. The data was released by Dun and Bradstreet on Wednesday.

Five year old Richard Garlough nearly drowned in a four foot deep water filled grease pit at a service station on Johnson Avenue and Nineteenth Street NW. His mother Mrs. Garlough pulled him from the oily water after he appeared mouth up from beneath the surface. He was treated for shock at St Luke’s and said to be in fair condition with penicillin given as an anti pneumonia measure.
Ammonia gas from a smashed tank at the Consumers Ice Company plant flooded much of Lebanon Pennsylvania. More than twenty people sought treatment for burns or exposure. one man Edward Toms, 36, of Penns Grove New Jersey, was hospitalized. Police advised residents the cloud posed no threat to the city life as frantic calls flooded hospitals and clinics.
Cedar Rapids men Raymond Axline Francis Axline and Mark Schaible had guns taken by Buffalo township Constable Frank Merritt after a weekend hunting on Merritt land. County Attorney Crissman said no charges would be filed after a conference with Justice H R Churchill. Merritt claimed authority citing license and guns as evidence. guns were returned tomorrow in the county attorney's office.
Premier Themistocles Sofoulis was stricken with a heart attack in his Athens office late Wednesday. His condition was reported critical as doctors treated him.
Joseph S. Walker 31 admitted to District Attorney Hatfield Chilson and sheriffs that he threw Theresa Foster 18 into a ravine after an encounter with a “chubby man” 21 to 25. He says the stranger killed her and that he later dumped parts of the body into Coal Creek canyon after driving from Lee's Way road.

Hospital officials apologized for a mix up where a 20 year old was wrongly given a tonsillectomy instead of a neck gland operation while another patient would have had her tonsils removed. The orderly the surgeon and the supervising nurse were blamed for the error. The patient likely will not be charged.
