Civil rights leader Hosea Williams laid to rest in Atlanta

More than 1,000 mourners followed Hosea Williams’ mule drawn coffin through downtown Atlanta to Morris Brown College during a three hour service led by Coretta Scott King. Williams, 74, died of kidney cancer, and his funeral echoed the 1968 King Temple march with denim overalls and red sneakers on display. Jesse Jackson praised him as a powerful symbol of hope and progress. He is to be buried beside his wife Juanita Williams.

Year 2000 disaster calm across United States

The United States faced unusually few major natural disasters in 2000 with minimal Y2K impact. FEMA paid about $252 million by Sept 1, far below normal aid, despite 39 declared disasters. Wildfires in New Mexico and Montana caused limited damage, and no hurricane or tropical storm struck heavily populated areas. The largest cost came from a South Florida flood at $95.3 million.
