Forecast shows fair to partly cloudy and warmer conditions with temps in the upper 20s to 30s and highs near 50s to 60s later in the week. Police court records include drunkenness, reckless driving and speeding fines, plus numerous divorce decrees and local obituaries from Independence, Tama, Tipton and surrounding towns.
Daniel A. Bolich a 29 year bureau employee and former assistant commissioner quit for health reasons. Internal Revenue Commissioner John B. Dunlap accepted the resignation noting he had been off duty since August. The move is part of a wider wave of tax officials who have resigned or been disciplined amid irregularities exposed by congressional investigators and department probes.
The board discussed adding a full month’s pension payment for deceased retirees, aligned with social security practices, and considered equipment upgrades for Cedar Rapids schools. They also planned a hot lunch program for Buchanan school, sidewalk surveys for hazardous streets, and reviewed insurance recommendations amid board voting autonomy.
Estler Randall Barton, wife of Bruce Barton, advertising executive, author and former congressman, died Tuesday at her New York home.
Coe College postpones the chapel dedication from December 5 due to unfinished work. A spring ceremony is planned with Dr. McCormick of the Theological Seminary as speaker. Dr. Gage, Coe president 1920 to 1941, remains on the board. A noon luncheon will follow and a recorded program will air on Cedar Rapids radio. A Centennial exhibit of early Coe days is set for the library.
Oscar C. Siegel Paul and David Rapoport sue Laura Paseka and Horsky and Wenkstein alleging an agreement to buy two thirds of the building at 40 Eighth Avenue SW for 63 000. They paid 5 000 on the price and seek performance or refund plus 7 333.33 damages and to bar Wenkstein’s interest.
A $160 check suit by City Sales Company of Central City against J G Arnold of Springville opened before Judge Floyd Philbrick’s jury. The trial follows a separate $15 000 personal injury case. Jurors from Cedar Rapids and surrounding townships were selected.
Four wills were admitted to probate Monday and Tuesday. Ellen Buehler died March 26 leaving 100 dollars to Sacred Heart church of Walker for masses and a life interest to her husband Albert. Rose Novotny died October 11 leaving 500 dollars to her daughter Dorothy Ann Novotny and the rest to her husband Stanley. Raymond R Huckins died November 5 naming his widow Eva M as sole heir and executrix without bond. Hermann Keller died November 12 leaving 500 dollars to house keeper Hattie Oxley and the rest to his children Robert S Keller Marian K Young and Lois E Novotny in equal shares. Robert Keller named executor without bond, George B Farmer administrator with a 6000 dollar bond.
Judge J E Heiserman on Tuesday awarded Oliver Greenly possession of farm machinery valued about $660 in a replevin case brought Feb 23 1951 against Elvin McBride The judgment also orders McBride to pay Greenly 30 damages for wrongful possession Abe Beechen was Monday awarded 400 50 against Betty Jo and Charlie series Jr on a sales contract suit
William Krejci doing business as Stop and Shop Foods sues Almer and Wood for alleged $114.23 due on account filed Tuesday in court.
Former U S Senator Clyde L. Herring died of cancer on Tuesday at Iowa Methodist Hospital after a long illness dating from 1945. He had resided with his brother Clyde E. Herring Polk County attorney during his final years.
J W Ludlow 63 of 413 Thirty-Sorth street NE Cedar Rapids died after a long illness at a local hospital. He served 30 years as traffic manager for No 1 Oats launching the company 31 years ago after railroad work. Born Aug 13 1888 in LaPorte City he married Eva Millard in 1911. Surviving wife two sons three daughters and seven grandchildren. Burial Cedar Memorial with services Friday at Turner chapel.
Ruth Helen Smith 3127 Outlook Drive SW Cedar Rapids died in a local hospital at 10 p.m. Monday after a long illness. Born February 25 1889 in Plymouth County she was married to Virgil Smith on February 25 1909 in Dewey County Oklahoma. Survived by husband three daughters Leora Dennis Olive Young Etta Ralston one son Virgil G. Smith five sisters three brothers twenty grandchildren four great grandchildren and members of the Church of the Nazarene. Turner chapel will hold funeral services Friday at 3 30 p.m. with Rev Charles Moore of Marion. Burial Cedar Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Wednesday and flowers are respectfully declined.
Vincent Senkyr 69 of 1409 Tenth Street SE Cedar Rapids was found dead at his home Monday. Born November 24 1882 in Czechoslovakia he served in World War I with the Canadian expeditionary forces. He worked for Quaker Oats and the Cedar Rapids park department before retiring. Surviving: brothers John in Canada Joseph in Wisconsin and sisters Frances Senkyr and Eleanor Slonek both in Czechoslovakia. Body at Kuba funeral home with funeral to be announced.

Gregory Lloyd Krotz infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Krotz died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 3 20 p m Monday. Surviving grandparents Mrs. George Deutsch Riverside and Mr. Mrs William Krotz Ainsworth, great grandmother Mrs Anna Krotz Riverside, and brother David Martin. Graveside services at Mt Calvary cemetery at 11 a m Wednesday conducted by priest Leo O Connell Lisbon with visitation at Turner chapel until 10 a m Wednesday.
Albert J. Chapman of 345 Sixth Avenue SW died Sunday. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday in St. Patrick’s Church conducted by Rt. Rev. Msgr. D. J. Lenihan. Burial follows at Mt. Calvary cemetery. Rosary 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Teahen chapel with calls allowed.
Judith Anne Danielsen aged 10 months daughter of Mr and Mrs John D Danielsen Jr of 2722 Dalewood Avenue SE died in unknown circumstances with city authorities investigating the death.
A Cedar Rapids woman died after a brief illness at 4 a.m. Tuesday. She was born January 13, 1951, in Cedar Rapids. She is survived by her parents a sister Susan Rae at home and grandparents Mr and Mrs John D. Danielson of Clinton. The Clinton Memorial chapel service is at 11 a.m. Wednesday with Rev N L Wogen of St Stephen's Lutheran Church. Friends may call at Turner chapel Tuesday evening.
Speakers Bertsch and Dr. Haridas Muzumdar urged active U S leadership and UN action to end aggression in Korea and promote peace. Muzumdar criticized Nehru and praised Stimson policy while Bertsch warned against reliance on foreign aid and stressed U S values and democracy. Conference sponsored by 45 Cedar Rapids groups and the American Friends Service Committee.
Sen Kerr assailed Sen Taft calling him a Hoover retreat and claiming Taft’s foreign policy book misleads. He praised Democrats for peacemaking and warned Republicans against defeat in 1952, while lauding Truman and highlighting strong security spending. About 261 attendees heard Kerr and Mekota recount early Iowa political battles.
Kenneth Hearn aged 18 of 1618 Fourth Avenue SE was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail after pleading guilty to petty larceny. Justice Miles Adams suspended 15 days. Hearn had taken clothing from Davis Cleaners last summer while employed there, Cedar Rapids detectives say.
The eight Iowa representatives, all Republicans, mostly backed economy votes in a Council of State Chambers of Commerce study while several voted against spending on key measures. Senator Gillette and others show mixed spending ties. page 11 reports on Hickenlooper’s economy record and page 5 on party-line voting. Local party leaders and officials attended the event in Cedar Rapids.
Final audit shows Cedar Rapids Chest raised 232000 plus dollars against a 226730 goal with 23758 contributors. Campaign Chairman B J Newburger credits 1500 volunteers and 1 500 workers for the record effort at the Montrose hotel meeting. Several groups exceeded targets with 17 of 24 precincts over goal.
Iowa crop bulletin shows only 39 percent of corn harvested by last Saturday, far below 1948 49 norms. Soybeans 91 percent harvested, with 15 percent left in north central areas. Moisture remains high delaying cribbing and overall progress is strongest in west central Iowa.
Opera star Herva Nelli arrives for a Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra benefit in Memorial Coliseum. The performance begins at 8 15 p m with tickets at the door. Nelli discusses Toscanini influence and her career steps between engagements in New York New Orleans and other cities.
Lawrence Polton, 22, of 1137 Sixth Street NW, is held on charges of molesting several women on city streets over two months. Inspector Frank Bukacek reports Polton signed a statement admitting four attacks. None of the victims were injured and he fled when resisted.
Sen. Frank Carlson of Kansas said that if General Eisenhower runs for president it will be on the Republican ticket. He spoke after an hour-long talk with Eisenhower at SHAPE headquarters noting Kansans discuss politics and hoping the general will be available, though his duty remains in Europe until action starts.
