The Daily Record reports fair to rising temperatures with northeast to southwest winds, and a Tuesday high expected 40 to 55 degrees. Includes city weather data, precipitation totals, sunrise and sunset times, and mortality notices and divorces, plus numerous court fines and local obituaries from Iowa communities.
A judge warned that colleges would have power to sanction and fund enforcement of an amateur code. He cited Oklahoma football players taking diverse courses, and University of Texas, Texas A and M, and SMU awarding hundreds of athletic scholarships. He noted large football profits at Penn, Kentucky, and Tennessee and Tennessee’s significant program spend.
A panel discussion on What Is Happening to Our Public Schools will be held Tuesday night at Arthur School. About 250 attendees are expected. Suptove Parker, Douglas Grant, Leroy Peterson, and Harry Boyd will speak, with Dr. George Warkentine moderating. Mrs. Orris A Wise leads the hosting Arthur Parent-Teacher Association with school board members invited.
Austin, a ghostlike mining town near Baker Oregon, once had a population of about 5000 after gold was discovered there in the 1860s. The boom era drew miners and settlers to the region shaping its early history.
Washington reports attorney general McGrath will probe the push to oust Charles O Gara, an assistant U S attorney who testified to Senate investigators about a shocking corruption ring in San Francisco s internal revenue office. O Gara cited many high placed figures amid a widening probe. San Francisco Tax Collector James G Smyth and eight colleagues faced suspensions as Senators pressed disclosures.
Cedar Rapids new Grant Wood school hosted an open house Sunday drawing nearly 6,000 visitors over 72 hours as National Education Week wrap up. Superintendent Clyde Parker said official count topped 5,000, with extra entrants through nonmain doors. Local staff, teachers, PTAs, cafeteria workers and custodians aided, with many superintendents and district officials in attendance.
Collins Radio Company raised hourly wages for 2,300 workers by five to 13 cents retroactive to the 15th. Immediate raises up to eight cents will be paid, with the rest pending Wage Stabilization Board approval. Salaried staff in Cedar Rapids and Burbank also saw about seven percent boosts.
Two men received $100 fines and a third faced a 30 day jail term after pleading guilty to reckless driving in traffic court. Names include John Edgeton of 1237 Fourth Street SW and Gus Riedesel with the proceedings noting their pleas.

Boston reports unveil the so called Surgeon Lt Joseph Cyr as Ferdinand W Demara Jr. of Lawrence aged 29. Demara’s father confirms the boy is his son and recalls a troubling 14 year arc of heartbreak. Canada probes Dr Cyr amid claims of remarkable wartime operations in Korea.
Beranek drew a jail sentence and Riedesel was fined 100 dollars for leaving the scene of an accident. Judge William Matias recommended a 60 day suspension of the driver's license. Riedesel, Edgeton and Beranek were arrested Sunday after separate accidents at Second Avenue and Tenth Street SE and other nearby locations.
Czech-born professor Josef Korbel spoke on Our Policy Toward Yugoslavia and Titoism, arguing Tito's break with Moscow creates a distinct Communist state. He favored continued aid to Tito to prevent Soviet reassertion, while cautioning policy should serve national interests. Other sessions featured Roberts on US obligations and McCorkel on European expectations.
Dr Roy McCorkel spoke at Coe students in St Pauls Church urging a redirected Marshall plan with mass production standards and more Point Four technical aid to lift Europe’s common man. He praised voluntary CARE aid for goodwill and criticized motive concerns in official aid while urging VOA broadcasts to highlight Western human progress.
The talk linked the rise of communist influence to global poverty and hunger while noting the Cicero race riots and the execution of Willie McGee as a focal point. Speakers included Richard C. Cedar Cape city council held a brief session approving several public works plans. The body backed drainage corrections on Cedar Cape street and Twenty ninth street drive, and required culverts by property owners. Also discussed were delayed street lights on Liberty drive and Markert boulevard, concrete paving on H avenue NE, and gas piping plus regulator pits in Elmcrest additions near Old Marion road.
The Iowa Taxpayers Association notes Linn County spent $1.87 per resident for all county offices in 1949, the lowest in Iowa among counties by population. In 25,000 plus populations Black Hawk Story Johnson Polk also low, while Kossuth high. Smaller counties show wide ranges, with Lyon low and Clarke high, suggesting potential state savings of over $1.5 million if all counties matched low per capita costs.
Charles Fitzgerald 61 of Marion and J S Young 31 of Cottage Grove Avenue at 34th Street SE pled guilty to drunk driving before Judge Philbrick. Each was fined 300 dollars plus costs. Fitzgerald arrested Saturday night by Officers Frayman and De Vault in Marion. Young arrested Sunday night by Patrolmen Fels and De Gear after following his car on Highway 218 for about five miles to Cedar Rapids edge. Both officers noted erratic driving.
Jurors were chosen Monday for a personal injury trial over an April 21 accident at Fifth avenue and Fourth street SE. Plaintiff Joseph F. Besta seeks 15100 in damages from defendant E. D. Silver. Attorney L. M. Hulinger represents Besta. Silver’s counsel not listed.
Court jurors drawn for the trial under Judge Charles Penningroth include M A Baker Earl W Delay Bernice A Diserens Raymond J Pollock Helen Teeple Frank P OBrien Ava L Nicholas Eve M Fiscus Elliott plus Paul Secrist Edward Riley William Walker and Olive Holub from nearby townships and towns.
Costs to run Linn county superintendent of schools rose 74 percent from 1947 to 1949 as Iowa Taxpayers Association figures show. The 1949 total for 99 offices was 920,735, up from 781,998 in 1948 merger year and 609,321 in 1947. Early merger effects hit Black Hawk and Lee counties hardest. Linn and others also rose sharply. In a separate item, Robert Brecht, 21, of Springville, was arrested in Linn county on a Norway warrant and handed to Norwegian authorities.
Abe Beechen Monday won a default foreclosure judgment against Charlie Hudson Jr and Betty Jo Hudson. Judge J E Heiserman found Beechen holds a $400.50 conditional sales contract. A separate June 4 suit by Edgar Wright against Charles Hubbell was dismissed at Wrights request.
Cedar Rapids based 133rd aircraft control and warning squadron members will not depart for Alexandria Louisiana for their new base until on or after December 1. The move, delayed from November 20, marks the unit’s second postponement since federalization on November 1. Major ElRoy Novak said about 60 percent of required new air force blue uniforms are on hand with rest to arrive after departure. An advance party led by Novak with S/Set. Walter Iliff and Cpl. Eugene Podhajsky will leave Thursday to prepare the arrival site. Capt. Russell Weenink will command in Novak’s absence.
Police investigated a break in at Lawson's service station on 97 First Avenue SW. The entry occurred through a south window between 11 p.m. Sunday and 6:10 a.m. Monday. The intruder took $62.70 from the cash register.

John Allen Rolls, 75, longtime Cedar Rapids resident, died at 12:05 a.m. Sunday at his home after a long illness. Born January 22, 1876 near Newton, he came to Cedar Rapids from Gilman. Survived by two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy McFarland of Des Moines and Mrs. Anna Horne of Newton. Funeral at Lynnville Friends Church Tuesday at 2 p.m. Burial in Friends Cemetery.
