A Cedar Rapids Area Convention and Visitors Bureau brainstorming session proposed promoting the city with an I love Cedar Rapids week and an all city festival for former residents. The group also considered orientation sessions for industry leaders local officials religious leaders youth groups and retired executives to attract conventions.
The city offered a uniform 2 percent pay raise to 360 AFSCME Local 62 employees with no fringe benefit changes, while other unions may see different terms. Negotiations with AFSCME begin November 30 behind closed doors, as unions pressed for higher wages and improved benefits. The city would still cover current health insurance but would require employees to pay any premium increases. It also proposed designating a union steward and at least one alternate per department. Additionally, a stray line notes Christopher Columbus’s 1493 voyage to Puerto Rico, unrelated to the labor dispute.
