Inmate Troy Kowalsky Dies After Jail Suicide Attempt
Linn County Sheriff reports Troy Kowalsky, 45, planned suicide for six months and hanged himself Sept 21 in a jail cell after being revived and dying Sept 22 at Mercy Medical Center. An attempted similar act led to bar modifications to prevent further deaths. Kowalsky faced a first degree murder charge in his mother’s death.

The Cedar Rapids Community School District reported 17,263 pre K through 12 students for 2005-06. African-American students totaled 2,388, about 14 percent, while they accounted for 462 of the 1,283 suspensions or expulsions, roughly 36 percent.
