A Cedar Rapids mother Mrs. Howard Moyle 17 and her two children Geraldine 8 months and Dale 2 died in a house fire at 1014 Tenth Street NE. Fire officials said the blaze began on a first floor chair, spread quickly through the home, and trapped the family on the second floor. Dale apparently attempted to escape, but the mother and Geraldine did not, with bodies found in an upstairs bedroom. The fire was reported at 11 27 a.m. and may have been caused by cigarette ashes igniting the chair.

Merle Ward age 38 of Center Point on Linn County bridge crew was fatally pinned beneath a backhoe bucket when the digging machine toppled into a ditch north of Springville. He died en route to St Luke's hospital after the 9:45 a.m. accident. Ward is survived by his wife and two children. The backhoe operator, Raymond Blackford of rural Marion, was treated for shock at St Luke's hospital.

Couple Is Killed in Flaming Highway Crash East of Colesburg
